Started in March 1882, 140 years ago, the church of the Sagrada Familia was first based on the plans of the architect Francisco de Paula del Villar. A year later, the architect Antoni Gaudi took over the work and construction of the Sagrada Familia. He changed the plans and transformed the original neo-Gothic project into a modern and innovative temple. Until his death in 1926, Gaudi worked on the plans and construction of the monument and since then several architects have followed him. In 2019, the Sagrada Familia was 70% complete with only 8 towers out of 18 planned. The construction of the monument will end in 2026, once completed, the basilica will be the largest church in the world. Thanks to the donations of visitors and the purchase of entrance tickets, the money collected is dedicated to the continuation of its construction but also to the renovation of the parts already damaged by time. Finally, the church is a testimony of Catalan modernism and has become an emblematic building of the city of Barcelona.
